September 26 is the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons (Nuclear Abolition Day), a day established by the UN General Assembly to enhance public awareness and action to reduce nuclear risks and achieve the common goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.
UNFOLD ZERO is part of NuclearAbolitionDay.org, an open, civil society coalition established in consultation with the UN Office of Disarmament Affairs, to increase cooperation, and elevate political impact of the day.
We encourage you to participate in the NuclearAbolitionDay actions and online event:
- Endorse the Nuclear Abolition Day Appeal (if you have not already done so), and encourage your colleagues, parliamentarians, local body representatives, religious leaders etc… to also endorse.
- Join Towards a Nuclear-Weapon-Free World, a civil society, global online event on September 25-26. The event will be in four sessions scheduled to suit all time-zones. It will be opened by video messages from Ms Izumi Nakamitsu, UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs; and Mr Michael Douglas, Academy Award actor and UN Peace Messenger, and will include premier global screenings of An Ordinary Insanity, a documentary featuring Daniel Ellsberg, along with expert presenters from around the world (more details below).
- Call on your government to: a) participate in the High-Level Meeting which will be held in the UN General Assembly on September 29; and b) promote the calls in the Nuclear Abolition Day Appeal at the meeting.
- Join Stop Nuclear Weapons: Peace is in Our Hands, a simple social media action that can be done anywhere to publicise Nuclear Abolition Day.
- Follow the Nuclear Abolition Day news blog. The most recent article is Nuclear Threats and Our Common Humanity: From Deterrence to Common Security, a call to action for religious, spiritual, ethical, and value-based leaders and communities on Nuclear Abolition Day.
Join this special online event to commemorate the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. The event will include:
- Short presentations by experts from around the world;
- Special screenings of the 29 minute documentary An Ordinary Insanity followed by discussion with the director and producer;
- Discussion of the principal calls made in the Joint Appeal for Nuclear Abolition Day;
- Examples of the social media action Stop Nuclear Weapons: Peace is in our Hands.
- Cultural performances for peace and nuclear abolition.
