The International Peace Bureau mourns the death of Tony de Brum who passed away this morning, on Tuesday 22nd August 2017.
Several times Foreign Minister of the Marshall Islands, known for his success in forming a “coalition of ambition” between developed and developing countries at the Paris climate talks in 2015, Tony de Brum also took action against nuclear powers after having witnessed as a child the US’s conduction of 67 atomic and thermonuclear weapons tests on his country’s soil.
He was a strong defender of nuclear disarmament and brought nine nuclear weapon states to the International Court of Justice in 2014 holding them accountable for their failure in abiding to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
He received the Sean MacBride Peace Prize in 2014 on behalf of The people and government of the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
We are very saddened by this news and present our deepest condolences to his family and friends.
