The Black Alliance for Peace (BAP) has launched its 5th International Month of Action Against AFRICOM, a global campaign dedicated to raising awareness and mobilizing action against foreign military intervention in Africa. This year’s theme, “21st Century Neocolonialism: Capitalism, Compradors, and the Ongoing Scramble for Africa,” highlights ongoing issues of militarization, dependency, and the exploitation of African resources.
For seventeen years, the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has played a central role in U.S. military operations on the continent. According to the campaign, AFRICOM functions as part of a broader system that sustains economic and political structures of control and limits the continent’s self-determination.
The Month of Action begins with an international webinar featuring voices from across Africa and the diaspora, emphasizing calls for the withdrawal of U.S. troops and the demilitarization of the continent. Throughout the month, individuals and organizations around the world will engage in a range of activities designed to increase public understanding and encourage dialogue on peace, sovereignty, and security in Africa.
Key campaign demands include:
- The complete withdrawal of U.S. forces from Africa
- The demilitarization of the African continent
- The closure of U.S. military bases worldwide
- Hearings by the U.S. Congressional Black Caucus on AFRICOM’s impact, with full participation from civil society in both Africa and the United States
