On June 17, the Helsinki+50 People’s Initiative will launch a global dialogue to prepare for activities marking the 50th anniversary of the Helsinki Conference and the signing of the Helsinki Accords. These accords inspired a significant international movement for human rights and peace. The initiative aims to renew commitments to common security and human rights at a time when these values are increasingly under threat.

The event will include three regional Zoom sessions for Asia and the Pacific, Europe and Africa, and the Americas. Participants will discuss the global importance of Helsinki+50 and a draft proposal for a People’s Declaration, which will be finalized by July 7 and presented at the upcoming activities in Helsinki from July 30 to August 2.

Why Helsinki+50 Matters
The Helsinki Conference of 1975 was a pivotal moment in post-World War II diplomacy. The Helsinki Accords fostered the “Helsinki Spirit” of cooperation, détente, and peace. Today, in the face of a global poly-crisis and weakened international cooperation, people’s movements must revive that spirit to build a better future.

A broad range of civil society organizations are invited to join this global initiative, contribute to the Helsinki+50 People’s Declaration, and take part in activities in Helsinki. The Declaration will be submitted to embassies of OSCE member states and used to inspire ongoing action around the world.
