Contrary to their Article VI obligations and previous NPT Review Conference commitments, we are facing an increasingly dangerous period. All nuclear-armed states are “modernizing” their omnicidal nuclear arsenals. The Kremlin’s nuclear threats during the war in Ukraine—emulating those of the U.S. in the past—have fueled political pressures in many nations to view nuclear deterrence as a necessity rather than a danger. Meanwhile, China is significantly increasing its nuclear arsenal, creating a situation in which the world is held hostage by three nuclear-armed scorpions in a bottle.

Uncertainties stemming from the Trump administration’s policies have also increased proliferation pressures in Europe, the Middle East, and across Northeast Asia.

In these troubling circumstances, nuclear abolitionist movements in Britain, Japan, and beyond continue to build political pressure and offer models for preventing nuclear war and achieving a nuclear-free future.
