Achieving the [im]possible: Peace and disarmament in the Middle East
- Tuesday, 23 July 13.15-14.45
- Description: The International Peace Bureau (IPB), the Middle East Treaty Organization, and the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung are pleased to invite you to a side event on the fringes of the 2024 NPT PrepCom.
The 2024 NPT PrepCom is an opportunity to strengthen efforts to achieve a Middle East WMD Free Zone (WMDFZ or the Zone) as it is inextricably linked to the 1995 NPT’s indefinite extension. This PrepCom comes at a challenging geopolitical reality facing the region and at a time when complementary processes are gathering momentum to advance the WMDFZ. This includes the 2018 UN General Assembly resolution on the Zone being implemented through the annual UN Conference for a WMD Free Zone in the Middle East (November Conference).
The side event will be an opportunity to look at the latest developments following the recent 2023 November Conference, linkages between the Zone, regional geopolitical conditions and advancing global disarmament. The event will also encourage cooperative and inclusive approaches along with tangible pathways forward toward regional peace and security. Relevant elements of METO’s latest Draft Treaty will also be presented and our latest working paper that addresses the interconnectedness of NPT with advancing nuclear weapons-free zones along with regional and global disarmament.
