Description:
This forum, “Great Power Rivalry, Small Nations at Risk,” will examine Trump’s 2025 National Security Strategy (NSS) and the Island Chain Strategy, with a focus on their implications for small nations, particularly the Philippines. It will take place on 31 January, 8:00–9:30 PM Philippine, 7:00 AM Boston, and 1:00 PM CET Berlin.
The discussion will explore how the 2025 NSS sharpens U.S. global priorities, promotes transactional alliances and burden-sharing, and advances militarization through expanded homeland defense and forward bases. For the Philippines, these policies frame the country as a frontline state in U.S. containment of China, increasing the risks of conflict, dependency, and militarization—felt most acutely by grassroots communities.
Forum objectives:
– Explain the 2025 NSS and its global implications
– Analyze transactional alliances and their impact on small nations
– Examine militarization and changes in U.S. security doctrine
– Situate the Philippines within the Island Chain Strategy
