The International Peace Bureau, Olof Palme International Center, and International Trade Union Confederation hereby invite you to join us on Tuesday, 27 July at 13:00 Central European Summer Time for the first digital summit in our Common Security 2022 series.

Please register for the event in advance at: https://bit.ly/3xXKcTb

The world is living a nuclear knife edge; we are in the beginning of a new nuclear arms race. The spending on nuclear weapons and the development of new technology for these weapons is on the rise in nuclear–armed countries – use of nuclear weapons on the battlefield has entered into the planning of military forces. The key responsibilities of these countries under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) continue to be ignored; the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) represents a new hope.

The first summit in the Common Security 2022 series focuses on one of the essential components needed for a 21st century reimagining of Common Security: the continued threat of nuclear weapons and the urgent need for disarmament and a universal ban on such weapons.

The webinar will include an introduction from Dr. Helen Durham, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) International Law and Policy Director. Presentations will include the following speakers:

• Fumihiko Yoshida, visiting scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and trustee of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation;
• Sergio Duarte, President of Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs and former UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs;
• Dr. Rebecca Johnson, Founding President of the International Campaign Against Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) and Executive Director of the Acronym Institute for Disarmament Diplomacy;
• Alexander Kmentt, Austrian Diplomat and Director of Disarmament, Arms Control and Nonproliferation at the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
• Srishty Aware, Youth Leader of the Indian Institute for Peace Disarmament & Environmental Protection.

The event will be moderated by Lisa Clark and Philip Jennings, Co-Presidents of the International Peace Bureau.
