IPB Activities since 1990

LEBANON Tyre (Sur) : A boy saves a few books from the rubble of his home, a six storey apartment building that was bombed by the Israeli air force. The building was in the middle of a densely populated area in the city of Tyre. Three casualties were reported. Photo used on the cover of Alexandria brochure.

  1. Women in Peacemaking project : Commemorations of the centenary of the Nobel Prize, awarded to IPB Vice President Bertha von Suttner (1905) - Geneva, Prague, Austria, Udine, The Hague etc. Exhibitions, symposiums, press articles and so on.
  2. PRAGUE - Workshop bringing together peace-women from Russia and Chechnya.
  3. LONDON - Consultation on new international project : Sustainable Disarmament for Sustainable Development + COUNCIL meeting.

  1. BARCELONA – Universal Forum of Cultures, organization of 5 day international congress: Towards a World Without Violence. In collaboration with Fundacio per la Pau, Barcelona.
  2. FLORENCE - International seminar on The Future of the United Nations. In collaboration with IPB-Italia.
  3. FLORENCE – Award of the MacBride Peace Prize to the leaders of the Geneva Initiative on the Middle East, + COUNCIL meeting.
  4. Participation in the ROME Nobels Summit organized by the city of Rome and the Gorbachev Foundation.
  5. GENEVA - Co-organization of International Seminar on Depleted Uranium Weapons.

2003

  1. ATHENS - IPB Triennial conference : Human Security : the United Nations, the Olympic Truce and Civil Society.
  2. Participation in the ROME Nobels Summit organized by the city of Rome and the Gorbachev Foundation.
  3. Appointment of H.E. Jayantha Dhanapala (Sri Lanka) as IPB Honorary President.
  4. Organization of NGO program at NPT Review Conference PrepComm (GENEVA), in collaboration with NGO Committees for Disarmament – and preparatory/follow up seminars.
  5. Award of MacBride Prize to Nihon Hidankyo (hibakusha from Hiroshima and Nagasaki) – NAGASAKI.
  6. Opening of ITALY office (Lugo) and development of campaign on European arms exports + other activities.
  7. Launch and distribution of new book : "From War to Peace", co-published with Nonviolence International. Analysis and lessons learned from 9 ceasefire and peace negotiation processes, GENEVA.

2002

  1. World Civil Society Forum, organization of peace and disarmament program GENEVA.
  2. Opening of BARCELONA office and beginning preparations for Barcelona 2004.
  3. Council meeting GENEVA + award of Sean MacBride Peace Prize to Barbara Lee (USA) – sole Congressional Representative opposed to Afghan War.
  4. Launch of Human Security program.
  5. Commemorations of the centenary of the Nobel Prizes awarded to Elie Ducommun and Albert Gobat, the first two IPB Secretaries-General (liaison with committees in GENEVA and in BIENNE).
  6. Participation in the ROME Nobels Summit organized by the city of Rome and the Gorbachev Foundation.

2001

  1. Protests against the Sept 11 attacks + Afghan war.
  2. ATHENS Conference - The Child : a Victim of War and a Messenger of Peace.
  3. Council meeting HELSINKI – Linked to international small arms conference.
  4. Disarmament Advocacy Program launched : covering Bio-weapons conf, Inhumane Weapons Convention, Small Arms, Landmines, Space/Missile Defence and nuclear issues.
  5. Active participation at the International Bureau of Education (ministerial) conference, GENEVA.
  6. Genève, un Lieu pour la Paix – Exhibitions, colloquium, peace itinerary etc to commemorate 100 years of Nobel Prize (Dunant/Passy 1901 Prize).
  7. Participation in public manifestations for Aung San Suu Kyi (1991 Prize), GENEVA, OSLO.
  8. OSLO, MILAN - Nobel centenary, official ceremonies.

  1. HAGUE APPEAL FOR PEACE CONFERENCE : Time to Abolish War! & Prep confs around the world. 10,000 participants.
  2. Launch of Global Campaign for Peace Education, Report of the Geneva Peace Education Conference published.
  3. Launch of International Action Network on Small Arms (at the Hague conference).
    Campaigns against Kosovo War and Chechnya War.

1998

  1. November conference on Peace Education GENEVA (Preparatory conference for Hague Appeal for Peace Congress, May 99) – Jointly organized with Geneva International School. (Venues : ILO and Intl. School).
  2. Council meeting London.
  3. Hague Appeal for Peace preparatory phase, including hosting organizing Committee meetings, GENEVA; grants and support to around 15 regional organizations and national prepcomms; Peace Matters newspaper.

  1. NPT Review and Extension Conference NEW YORK. Launch of Abolition 2000.
  2. BEIJING UN Women’s conference - Preparatory materials and launch of annual May 24th booklet on women and peacemaking.
  3. Successful IPB nomination results in Nobel Peace Prize for Joseph Rotblat and Pugwash movement. IPB attends Nobel award ceremony in OSLO and organizes public events.
  4. IPB organizes protests against French nuclear testing, including in GENEVA.
  5. UN 50th anniversary – Diverse activities.
  6. Council meeting POTSDAM and conference Citizens' Responses to armed conflicts in C. and E. Europe.
  7. Speech in DRESDEN on 50th anniversary of the bombings.
